New at Procurement Solutions 2007, 'The Public Office', where public servants create better services through public insight
“We need more innovative ways of conveying to public service leaders that transformation is all about the customer”
Sir Gus O'Donnell
This year will see something new at Procurement Solutions. As government seeks to transform itself and move to e-enabled self-service, The Public Office will provide a unique space where selected participants will engage directly with the experiences and insights of citizens, and work alongside peers, service designers and provocateurs - including Geoff Mulgan, Matthew Taylor and Ed Mayo - to find new and collaborative ways of delivering public services.
As the needs of users, customers and citizens became the centre of attention for government policy on public service delivery, the expectations on government departments to work together to interpret and respond with positive action are becoming more acute. And, as ever, converting rhetoric to reality is difficult in the context of the day-to-day, when it is almost impossible to find time to reflect on the issues and imagine the possibilities, let alone identify tangible ways of doing things differently.
The Public Office has been specifically designed and created to provide senior public service leaders with a chance to do just this, within an interactive environment that connects the stories of citizens with possible new public service solutions, bringing the critical issues to life:
- Capturing public insight is one thing, but how does this translate into new services?
- How do we design public services which work for users?
- How do we wind down old services and wind up new ones?
- How do we grow new leaders to do this work for us?
Cable&Wireless are participating in The Public Office, led by Kable, together with the National Consumer Council, EDS and curators Central St Martins College of Art and Design. It is being held at Earls Court on 12 and 13 June 2007, co-located with Procurement Solutions and the UK's leading public service futures event, GC 2007 Expo.
As well as a limited number of private gatherings for public servant leaders, there are also open times when all visitors to Procurement Solutions can go to The Public Office and find a new way to focus on customers and the role of new business processes and technology in the delivery of public services.
