GSE opens up economies of scale for all parties and paves the way for shared services across the public sector
The GSi today links nearly 170 government organisations, carries over 1,000,000 emails every day and facilitates shared services between numerous organisations.
Valuable yes, but more value can be added, in partnership with commercial organisations.
And that's where the Government Secure Extranet (GSE) comes in. Its purpose is to allow private sector suppliers of electronic services to communicate with you securely and reliably. GSE permits List-X and equivalent organisations to exchange information with a protective marking up to and including CONFIDENTIAL.
GSE opens up economies of scale for all parties and paves the way for shared services across the public sector. To begin with, it promotes significant efficiencies by enabling you to utilise your GSi connection to access on-line services provided by the GSE-connected supplier. In parallel with this, the supplier has potentially only a need to connect once to the GSE to supply multiple public sector customers. The economies offered by this are obvious and the best applications are leading the way in delivering common back-office systems that could become widely adopted across government, driving efficiency objectives in the process.
Midland HR
One such organisation that has recently joined the GSE community is MidlandHR, an integrated HR and payroll services provider, who have a requirement to provide secure HR and payroll services to government. In order for an organisation like MidlandHR to be authorised to connect to the GSE, the company has to meet the same security standards as the GSi connected sponsoring department through the equivalent control measures in the Code of Connection (CoCo). The CoCo is then assessed by CESG (the UK National Technical Authority for Information Assurance) using rigorous security criteria. MidlandHR was recommended and sponsored by GSi member, the Law Officers Department. Through ensuring that the same security assurance standards are adopted between supplier and department, the service carries much less risk.
Given its ability to leverage existing investment, its ability to expedite deployment of services and the economies offered by one-to-many access, GSE addresses the long term goals of the Varney report on Service Transformation, driving value for money, shared services and effective service delivery.
