Great Expectations?
How many people reading this article have ordered a PC with the expectation that it will be delivered the following day, or certainly within 3-5 days? Nine times out of ten this is exactly what happens. However, have you ever stopped to think about how long it actually takes to manufacture a PC? Take a look at these figures:
- It takes 90 days to manufacture a microchip
- It takes 90 days to manufacture an LCD flat panel display
- It takes 120 days to manufacture a hard disk
- Gathering all of the components together prior to PC build takes four months minimum
- It takes a few days to assemble the parts to become a laptop / desktop PC
- Shipment by sea takes around four weeks (a majority of the manufacturing process takes place in the Far East).
So, given that factory production and costs are decided months before you've decided that you need to place an order, it's quite remarkable that the stock is available at the time you need it.
