Procurement Solutions for the public sector 2007

The reputation of the Procurement Solutions for the public sector exhibition and conference as the “biggest, best and most important” event on the procurement calendar has been enhanced by the success of PS07, held at Earls Court in June.

The event, organised by OGCbuying.solutions with OGC and the Regional Centres of Excellence, attracted more than 3000 visitors over the two days with 135 suppliers taking exhibition space.

A packed conference and seminar programme provided high-level briefings on the latest developments in public sector procurement and detailed information, advice and guidance for buyers on a diverse range of issues, products and services, themed around sustainability, value for money and procurement processes.

And there was huge demand for seats for the “Celebrity Inspiration” workshops delivered by World Cup winning England rugby coach Sir Clive Woodward and one of Britain's best-known business gurus Sir Gerry Robinson.

Both Knights explored the vital ingredient that most organisations constantly strive to discover and nurture, namely leadership.

The drive for collaboration and the value of category management were explored at length by Acting OGC Chief Executive Peter Fanning and others while Jonathon Porritt discussed the progress of embedding sustainable procurement – and the work still to be done.

There were interesting insights into managing relationships using best practice examples from Glasgow City Council and Scotland as a whole, and a visionary session looking at the future of local government delivered by Rob Sykes, Chair of the Chief Executive's Task Force and Steve Holland, RCE Regional Director.

Meanwhile The OGCbuying.solutions stand, situated at the heart of proceedings, was especially busy with the welcome return of Speakers Corner covering a myriad of topics from eSourcing, Travel, Postal Services, the Managed Telecommunications Service (Mts) and procurement cards. And an area devoted to Zanzibar, the public sector's purchase to pay system and e-marketplace, delivered dozens of demonstrations to customers.

One customer, Annette Spratley, from the London Borough of Hounslow, was in no doubt about the value of PS07:

“It was great to have the opportunity to find out what's out there and what questions people in procurement roles should be asking of their suppliers. This event enables me to have a broader view of public sector procurement. The seminar programme was especially valuable and the educational side of the event will have a positive impact on my day-to-day role.”
