The need for change
Buying Solutions has been very successful in the past in meeting the performance targets set for it by Government and, in the last completed financial year, delivered more than £500 million worth of savings for the nation.
But at the beginning of 2007, the Government identified the need for increased efficiencies, articulated in the Treasury's Transforming Government Procurement Report.
This required Government departments to stop duplicating procurement activity in order to achieve even greater savings for the public purse.
The Treasury's objectives are set high, aimed no less than: “equipping the UK with the capability to deliver world-class public services in the face of growing challenges from global competition, changing demographics and increasing pressures on the environment.”
Clearly, such an ambitious goal requires root and branch, transformational step-change.
Buying Solutions is now almost six months into a three year business strategy aimed at delivering at least £1 billion worth of savings to the taxpayer annually, every year from 2010/11 onwards.
Broadly speaking, we will achieve this through major change - innovative business methods, increased effectiveness and efficiency, higher skill and expertise levels, better management of services, greater emphasis on sustainability and improved communication.
But above all, our focus will be on maximising customer satisfaction, and that, of course, is where our valued suppliers have a key role to play.
